Juan Montalvo

Originally from Guatemala City, Juan Montalvo is a Toronto-based cinematographer with a strong foundation in visual storytelling, shaped by early exposure to the rich iconography of Mayan and Spanish Catholic cultures. After earning a Dramatic Arts Honours Degree from Northeastern University in Boston, he transitioned into cinematography through IATSE Camera Local 667.

Juan’s work combines a deep understanding of drama and performance with a refined visual style focused on narrative and emotion. His career has taken him internationally to cities including Venice, London, Prague, New York, Moscow, and Los Angeles. Early in his career, Juan trained alongside acclaimed cinematographers including Jeff Cronenweth ASC (The Social Network, Gone Girl, Tron: Ares), John Leonetti ASC (The Conjuring, Insidious, The Mask), and Xavier Grobet ASC AMC (Nacho Libre, The White Lotus). These formative collaborations helped shape both his technical craft and his narrative sensibilities.
